Tottenham Hotspur Player of the Month: Dean Richards
After a near-perfect August for Tottenham results wise, September was a disappointing month in comparison despite some excellent individual displays.
Not least those of Dean Richards, who made some key contributions in defence and attack and, as a result, is Spurs' player of the month according to Opta Index.
The former Southampton man got his and Tottenham's September off to a dream start on the 11th when he scored his first goal of the season just after the half-hour mark to put the team ahead at Fulham. But despite another Spurs strike and some brave rearguard action - not least by Richards - the Cottagers came back to snatch the points.
After sustaining a knock in that Loftus Road clash, Tottenham's number 36 missed the next match, an exciting 3-2 win over London rivals West Ham. But the ex-Wolves star was back for the trip to Old Trafford on the 21st and helped Tottenham contain the Red Devils for the majority of the match. In fact, so good was Spurs' defending that it took a penalty from Ruud van Nistelrooy to settle the outcome.
Easily the most disappointing game of September was the 3-0 defeat at home to Middlesbrough on the 28th. With injuries having taken their toll, Glenn Hoddle's men struggled to contain a lively Boro' attack and they ran out comfortable winners.
Even so, Richards still managed to make some important clearances in the clash, taking his total for the month to an impressive 43. He also made 14 tackles in September taking his season's tally to 21 - only Jamie Redknapp and Simon Davies can boast more in the White Hart Lane squad.
Once Richards is reunited with his injured defensive allies, Tottenham will have a far sounder base to build upon and inconsistent months like September will be a thing of the past.
