Once upon a Spur: Dennis Patten
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
The first Spurs game I ever attended was at White Hart Lane in 1954 against Aston Villa. The second two weeks later was the final match in Tottenham colours by the great push and run winger Les Medley, before he emigrated to Canada.
My late Father and I were season ticket holders in the Old Stand from 1954, and I was privileged to witness my boyhood hero Ted Ditchburn, every second Saturday afternoon. I personally met with George Robb once or twice a year when he coached an opposing school team.
Emigrating to America and Canada in 1968. I religiously tune in on short-wave in the early hours of Saturday morning in Vancouver, to listen to sports report and hopefully a second half broadcast of a Spurs game.
Working in Radio in Vancouver and attending Whitecaps games, I met Mike England then with Seattle Sounders, Ricky Villa with a Florida squad and Derek Posse, who eventually became a friend.
Several wives and lifestyles later I’m here in Sydney, Australia - and a career in Radio with my own dream profession introducing everyone from Naomi Campbell to Gary Lineker, who posed for a photo with me during England’s visit in 1991.
With all kinds of ex wives and babies from Toronto to Vancouver, New York to Sydney, all my offsprings, from aged 32 to 9, sport the "lillywhite" colours. In fact my nine year old son has his wall in suburban Sydney adorned with Spurs items, with a special spot for....Bobby Smith.
I was asked by a very sexy Indian girlfriend the other day, "what would you like me to wear to turn you on, a sari". No, I replied, presenting her with a Spurs home shirt.....!!!
