Once upon a Spur: Deborah Tomkinson
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
I am writing this e-mail as a nostalgic look back from my childhood to the present day of my involvement with the club that is closest to my heart - Spurs.
I begin my story when I was 4 years of age. Being born in Manchester there were not a lot (if any) Spurs fans around these parts. I was watching us win trophy after trophy back in them Glory days as an armchair supporter as I didn’t think I would ever get to realise my dream of ever
getting to the Lane.
My dad quickly latched on to me liking football, so in his wisdom he took me to my local team, which was Oldham Athletic. I enjoyed the football as me and my dad watched but there was something not quite right.
Yes I was watching football, but it wasn’t Spurs. One week we were standing on the terraces at Boundary Park and I said to my dad: "Dad, next week can we go to Spurs?" and he kindly said that Spurs was too far away and that I should support my local team instead of a team hundreds of miles away.
So with this I still followed Spurs from a point of view that I would look to see if they won from week to week while carrying an ambition to someday go to the Lane and be part of the crowd.
Many years later my husband asked me what I would like for my birthday so I told him that I would like to go to White Hart Lane and see Spurs play. He replied "If you can get tickets then we will go".
Sure enough I rang up and got the tickets and I was lucky enough to get them for a FA Cup game which I will remember for the rest of my life.
From that day on I go to every weekend game at the Lane and I get extremely upset if I cannot go. That day I was bitten by the bug that is Tottenham and the atmosphere and passion of the Lane.
I have also written a new chapter in this story now - I graduated from Member to Season Ticket Holder this season.
I am proud to be part of Spurs and I am a Lillywhite forever, that will never change.
