On this day...special
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
One of the great nights at the Lane was 19 years ago today - Graham Roberts recalls lifting the UEFA Cup after the thrilling penalty shoot-out win against Anderlecht.
GRAHAM ROBERTS played more than a captain's role when we lifted the UEFA Cup against Anderlecht.
Skipper in the absence of suspended club legend Steve Perryman, the steely midfielder grabbed the vital late equaliser against the Dutch side to take the game into extra time and then netted the first penalty in a shoot-out that is now part of Spurs folk lore.
Having drawn the first leg 1-1, Anderlecht took what would have been a trophy-winning 1-0 lead before Roberts' intervention and Tony Parks' heroics from the spot.
"I can remember every game I played in," said Graham, now boss at Carshalton. "People ask me 'how do you remember that?', but those memories don't leave you.
"The final was special though. Everyone felt sorry for Stevie P, it was a blow for him, but to be asked to be captain on the way home from the second leg was the greatest feeling of my life.
"That night we showed what a great club we were. We were decimated by injuries and suspensions - Glenn, Ray Clemence, Stevie P, Garth Crooks - but we rolled our sleeves up and said 'we're not going to lose this'.
"When we went 1-0 down it was a bit nerve-wracking but to get the goal before the end was great.
"I remember Ossie missing a sitter, it hit the bar, went back out wide, Micky Hazard crossing the ball, I was behind Mark Falco and I thought he was going to head it but he just shoved the defender out of the way, I chested it down, brushed off a defender who tried to bring me down and side footed it in the corner. That lives with me forever that one. The noise was unbelievable.
"I then took the first penalty and I just wanted to score. I watch it now on TV and I can still hear a girl behind the goal swearing 'get in there you...' I can still hear that. When Danny missed we had to keep our cool, we did and then Parksy pulled off his wonder save."
