Today we look back at a 1901 FA Cup winner, a five-goal spree from an early legend, another FA Cup tie to remember and the debut of a certain Steffen Freund...

ON THIS DAY

1905 – We beat West Ham 10-1 in the Southern Charity Cup semi-final. It was the first time we’d hit double-figures in a competitive match and Vivian Woodward, one of the club’s early greats, led the way with five goals. Woodward joined us in 1901 and played 27 times, scoring 18 goals in our debut campaign in the Second Division, 1908-09. He scored 29 goals in 23 England internationals and led Great Britain to Olympic Gold in 1908 and 1912.

1959 – John Kirwan passed away. John played for us between 1899-1905 and was a member of the team that made history by becoming the first amateur club to lift the FA Cup in 1901.

1980 – A famous FA Cup win at Old Trafford. Having drawn 1-1 in the initial tie at the Lane, we looked up against it as Milija Aleksic was stretchered off and Glenn Hoddle took over in goal. The game went into extra time when Ricky Villa set-up Ossie Ardiles to curl home for 1-0.

1999 – Steffen Freund made his Spurs debut at Sheffield Wednesday. The game finished 0-0 in the Premier League and the popular midfielder went on to make 131 appearances in all competitions, including the League Cup Final win at Wembley just two months after joining the club. Steffen is now a member of our coaching staff.
