Old Trafford win can inspire us - Andre
Andre Villas-Boas insists the team can take inspiration from our fantastic win at Old Trafford in September when we face United again at the Lane on Sunday.
The foundations for our first victory at Old Trafford since 1989 were laid in a textbook first half performance where we took the game to United and went into a deserved 2-0 half-time lead through Jan Vertonghen and Gareth Bale.
The second half kicked-off with a spell of three goals in three minutes – Nani made it 2-1, Clint Dempsey tapped in what turned out to be the winner for 3-1 and then Shinji Kagawa slotted home for 3-2.
“It was an important win at the time,” said Andre. “We’d come from win at Reading after two draws at home, and it was important for the team to put together a run of results.
“It was also very inspiring for everyone at the club with all the years we’d tried to get a positive result there and something we know will inspire us again.
“The first half performance was fantastic, we went 2-0 up playing great football and if we can replicate that, we have a chance, for sure.”
One key difference to United and recent home matches is that the Premier League leaders are likely to ‘have a go’, rather than sit in deep.
“That’s important,” added Andre. “Obviously, that means we will be tested at the back a bit more.
“In recent (home) games, we’ve seen teams drop back and they don’t give us lots of space. You would expect United to attack us and maybe then we will find gaps we haven’t found in recent matches.”
