Off the mark

Luka Modric hopes his strike against Spartak Moscow will be a first of many as he opened his goalscoring account for the Club.

Luka Modric hopes his strike against Spartak Moscow will be a first of many as he opened his goalscoring account for the Club.

It has taken the Croatian 18 games to break his duck since a summer move from Dinamo Zagreb, despite contributing so much more to our recent resurgence under Harry Redknapp.

And he chose an ideal moment at which to finally find the back of the net, as at 2-0 down against the Russians we could have been heading out of the UEFA Cup.

But Luka's first-time finish on 68 minutes was followed by Tom Huddlestone's equaliser six minutes later, and now we find ourselves safely through to the knock-out stage.

Luka said: "I had been waiting for this moment and now I'm very happy. This is my first goal but I hope I keep scoring.

"It was an important goal and it was important that we didn't lose this game. But I hope this goal now gives me the confidence for future games, and now I want to score in the Premier League.

"I've been close to scoring in previous games, but hopefully this will take the pressure off me a little!

"This is a big competition with strong teams, and I'm very happy that we are staying in the UEFA Cup."
