Obika back on target

Jon Obika scored on his return as our Spurs XI team lost 2-1 in a friendly at Enfield Town on Wednesday night.

Jon Obika scored on his return as our Spurs XI team lost 2-1 in a friendly at Enfield Town on Wednesday night.

The striker was back in action for the first time since recovering from a knee injury sustained on loan at Yeovil in August.

He opened the scoring in the 47th minute of the match to mark the official opening of Enfield's new Queen Elizabeth Stadium.

All logic suggested that would pave the way for a Spurs win but the home side - having made a number of substitutions - regrouped, scored two goals in as many minutes and then held onto their 2-1 advantage to make it the perfect night from their point of view.

The team carved out a host of chances in an entertaining first half.

Ryan Fredericks went close before Yago Falque had a goal disallowed for offside in the 15th minute.

Home goalkeeper Matt Davis then made three outstanding saves in quick succession - turning away Cristian Ceballos' free-kick from 20 yards, touching over Falque's 25-yarder and then tipping wide Andros Townsend's piledriver from the edge of the box.

When he was beaten, Dean Parrett's thunderbolt rattled the crossbar and Massimo Luongo's drive whistled just over. Davis was there again to foil Falque one-on-one just before the break.

We didn't have it all our own way though as Adam Wallace, Jon Moore and Liam Hope all went close for Town, Hope glancing his header just wide.

The opener arrived two minutes into the second half. Ceballos picked out Obika between defenders and Obika steadied himself before slotting his shot home off the inside of the post from 12 yards.

The goal seemed to galvanise the home team and Rudi Hall went close before setting up the equaliser for Michael Eway, who finished well from the left angle one-on-one in the 62nd minute.

Two minutes later and the Enfield were ahead as Mark Kirby headed a corner back across goal for Hope to finish from close range.

Parrett struck the crossbar again with another dipper from distance and substitutes Alex Pritchard and Ronnie Hawkins also went close but Town held on for the win.

Spurs XI: Miles; Fredericks, Stewart, Yeboah (Pritchard, 46), Bostock; Ceballos (Hawkins, 70), Luongo, Parrett, Townsend; Falque; Obika (Day, 58). Unused sub: Granger.
