'Now is the time to be clever' - Mauricio

05 October 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino feels the team needs to use the performance against City as a benchmark for the rest of the season.

Naturally delighted with the display and 2-0 victory on Sunday, the manager says it is important not to get too carried away as we prepare for our next game, a tough trip to West Brom after the international break.

We take our seven-match unbeaten start to the campaign – our best in the Premier League – to The Hawthorns on Saturday, October 15.

“For our supporters, it’s exciting and the energy they transfer to us is fantastic,” said Mauricio. “For us, we need to be clever.

“It’s only the beginning of the season. It was a good game but we need to use it to try to improve every day and every game.

“That is the example and we need to push and be clever to use it to try to improve.

“I’m happy but it’s only three points. Tottenham is a big club and we need to be ambitious. We need to fight for titles at the end, that is our aim.”

As always, Mauricio was acutely aware of the role our fans played in Sunday’s win with an electric atmosphere inside the stadium. Indeed, Dele Alli told us afterwards that it drives the players on.

“The connection is fantastic and our fans are unbelievable,” added Mauricio. “They showed us that against Monaco (in the Champions League) with nearly 90,000 (at Wembley) and I’m sure it will be the same in the next games. That shows how big our club is.”
