There is no real need to introduce Gilberto’s friend and former team-mate lining-up against us this weekend.
There is no real need to introduce Gilberto’s friend and former team-mate lining-up against us this weekend.Blackburn defender Christopher Samba has already more than made his mark against us this season.
If you need reminding, cast your mind back to October and Samba’s unstoppable drive into the top corner with the last kick of the game to consign us to a 2-1 loss at the Lane.
He’s available again after suspension for Saturday’s clash at Ewood Park and Gilberto isn’t surprised he’s made such an impact in the Premier League.
“Yes, I played with Christopher at Hertha Berlin,” said the Brazilian, who joined the Bundesliga side at the same time as Samba in July, 2004.
“He’s so big and powerful. He’s a defender but he’s versatile and sometimes at Hertha we pushed him forward and played a long ball up to him as he’s so strong in the air.
“He didn’t have as much playing time at Hertha but here in England he’s playing regularly and playing with more confidence.”
Gilberto has also crossed swords with one of the league’s top marksmen this season – Roque Santa Cruz.
The striker snapped up from Bayern Munich has been a big hit with 14 goals in 31 appearances, the same league total as Robbie Keane.
“I know him well from playing against Paraguay for Brazil,” added Gilberto. “He didn’t start regularly at Bayern Munich (82 between 1999-2007) because they had Roy Makaay. He’s a regular for Paraguay and this was a real opportunity for him.”
