Nkoudou speaks on realising his dream with Spurs

Wed 31 August 2016, 18:19|Tottenham Hotspur

Georges-Kevin Nkoudou could barely keep the smile off his face after completing his move from Marseille.

The dynamic attacker, 21, is embarking on an exciting new chapter in his career after impressive seasons in France with Ligue 1 sides Nantes and Marseille saw him win plenty of admirers thanks to his fast-paced, energetic style of play.

Those characteristics are mirrored in his ebullient persona off the pitch and now that he’s a Spurs player, the Versailles-born livewire says he’s eager to bring his skills to the Premier League stage for the benefit of everyone at White Hart Lane.

“I’m really delighted to sign for this team. It’s a really great English club with a lot of ambition, which is the reason why I have moved here,” beamed the wide man, speaking to us in French despite making good progress in his English language lessons.

“I always dreamed of playing in England and I watched a lot of Premier League football last year, including Tottenham games. That's what attracted me.

“It’s true that I watched many Premier League games when I was a child as well and I remember a few players that made me want to come here – Gareth Bale for instance, who has played here. There was also Cristiano Ronaldo when he was playing for Manchester United. They inspired me because they play the way I like to – they like to challenge defenders, to dribble.

“I can’t wait to get started with the Premier League and the English game. It suits my playing style, it’s explosive. Everyone knows I’m fast, I like to dribble around players, so the English league is best for me.”

Known simply as ‘GK’, the former Paris Saint-Germain youth player has been linked with a switch to the Club since last month.

Now that he’s here, he believes he’s in the perfect place to continue taking things on board and develop as a player, as he did at Marseille in 2015-16.

“Last year I made a lot of progress by listening to those around me, whether at Marseille or within family,” he explained. “I listen, that is one of my strengths. If I want to keep making progress, I have to keep listening.

“For me, it’s a relief to finally join Tottenham and I’m very happy to be here. I’m very excited because this is a big club, there are lots of top-class players here and the fans are also incredible. On top of that, we will play in the Champions League so I can’t wait to get started.”

GK also revealed how flattered he’s been by the groundswell of anticipation surrounding his arrival from our supporters on social media: “It was very nice to know that fans from abroad wanted me to join, it made me want to come to Tottenham even more. It means they know what I am capable of on the pitch and it made me very happy.”

A France Under-21 international, GK was nominated on the original shortlist of 50 for UEFA’s Best Player in Europe award last season. However, he remained humble when asked about that honour: “It doesn’t change anything, I have to stay grounded,” he said. “It’s nice to be on the same list as all those big players, but I don’t think about it too much. It’s a good thing, but I have to keep working in order to stay on that list and maybe make the top 10 one day.”
