NextGen Series: Anderlecht 1-1 Spurs
Anderlecht scored a late equaliser in Belgium as our U19s drew 1-1 in our NextGen Series Group One fixture.
In front of a boisterous crowd of 8000 at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium in Brussels, the opening 45 minutes were a tight affair with Shaquile Coulthirst and Nabil Bentaleb going closest to giving us the lead, but Anderlecht were always a threat.
Jack Barthram defended stoically throughout the half and goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux had to make a superb diving save to keep the score level, but we went into half-time on top.
Both sides came out after the break determined to get on the scoresheet and it made for a hugely entertaining spectacle.
Anderlecht almost took the lead when a shot came back off the crossbar, but it was Bentaleb who grabbed the opening goal from the penalty spot in the 60th minute after Barthram was brought down in the box.
Oswal Alvarez equalised fifteen minutes later for the Belgians but we regained the momentum and finished the match on top.
The draw leaves the lads in second-place in Group One - three points behind first-placed Barcelona - having played four games.
After the match, Academy Manager John McDermott said: "It was a fantastic experience for all the players. It was a hostile atmosphere with a huge crowd.
"It was a very pleasing team display and Veljkovic, Bentaleb, Barthram and Winks all gave excellent individual performances."
