Holiday Programme at Tottenham Hotspur Study Support Centre
The first two weeks of the school holidays saw the stadium overrun with children wielding digital video cameras. No, not a new reality TV show, it was all for educational purposes as the children were all graduates from the club’s Study Support Centre who had volunteered for our holiday programme. The main activity for the week was making digital video films about a week in the life of the club and no stone was left unturned as children scoured the stadium for stories and willing members of staff to interview!
The children were delighted to be able to interview Spurs’ Poet in residence, Sarah Wardle, who was taken ‘on location’ round the stadium, questioned and filmed by the different groups. She then treated them to a recital of some of her work. On Thursday we held a press conference with a member of the press and marketing department which was held in the official press auditorium and we also covered the launch of the new kit in the Megastore on 28th July. The 21 graduates who came back for the summer programme learned valuable new computer skills and had the chance to mix with students from different schools and make new friends. As a reward for all their hard work, all the graduates who attended were given a ticket for the Spurs vs Cagliari game which rounded off the two weeks perfectly.
Many thanks to everyone in the club who gave up their time to be interviewed, look out for the completed films on the website at a future date.
Graduates at the Study Support Centre
In the first week of September the Study Centre held its summer term graduation ceremony. Students attended with their parents and there were also guests from Haringey Education Authority as well as the heads and link teachers from all the schools represented.
On this occasion Les Craggs, Deputy Director for Education in Haringey, joined us to take part in the ceremony. In his speech he applauded the achievement of pupils, reminding them to believe in themselves and to carry on the enthusiasm and progress they had made at the Study Centre back into their schools.
We were lucky enough on this occasion to have Pedro Mendes as our guest of honour to shake hands and hand out certificates. All of the pupils were absolutely delighted to meet Pedro and get a special well done from a Tottenham first team player. We’d like to extend our thanks to Pedro for giving up his time to come to the graduation and give out prizes.
Each term, pupils who have completed the ‘Playing for Success’ programme are presented with certificates recognising their achievement. There are also prizes awarded for exceptional achievement in certain areas, for instance outstanding student and most improved student. This term we were also able to showcase the winners of our video film making course from the secondary schools.
Alongside their certificates students also received a special Tottenham folder of their work, all of their work on disc and a record of achievement filled in by the learning mentors and the centre manager. It was the finishing touch for the pupils to receive all this from a Tottenham player!
All the parents and guests could see how much it meant to the pupils to have their achievement validated by such an important ceremony.
The ceremony was filmed on this occasion by TWI for showcasing on the Jumbotrons and some of the parents were asked about their child’s experience of the Study Centre. All the parents I spoke to were very happy with the progress their child had made during their time with us. One parent said: “She really enjoyed coming and has certainly become more confident about learning.”
It was very satisfying to receive such positive feedback and reflected very well on the club for its commitment to the Playing for Success scheme. It was also a nice payback for the hard work that all the staff put into running the Study Support Centre.
