Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur

Whatever the outcome of this game it is a fair bet that there will be shots flying in from all angles as it has been fully 30 years since Newcastle and Spurs have played out a scoreless draw. Add to the equation that the visitors have not kept a clean sheet in the Premiership for more than a month and the pendulum begins to swing in the favour of the Magpies.

Manager Bobby Robson is desperately bidding to win the war against inconsistency that riddled the Geordies’ season last term. The club are now fifth in the table after their four-goal demolition of Bolton last week, but have yet to eradicate the inexplicable defeats that are often sandwiched between colossal wins — the drubbing at West Ham suffered immediately after toppling the champions for example.

But if Newcastle are prone to bouts of non-belief, then Spurs are the masters of unpredictability. The north Londoners have yet to record back-to-back league wins this season and as a result they are bobbing around in the lower half of the table. The main problem is that they have leaked as many goals as they have scored.

The signing of Dean Richards has yet to result in assuredness at the back and the Lilywhites are conceding an average of 1.56 goals per game. At this rate Neil Sullivan will have picked 59 balls out of the back of his net come the season’s end — five more than last year.

Worst still for Glenn Hoddle’s men is that Newcastle have struck four goals in a game on three different occasions during the campaign. All four of the Magpies frontrunners scored at the Reebok Stadium last week and Alan Shearer and Craig Bellamy are beginning to forge an understanding in attack that has yielded five strikes between them. With this in mind the odds on a 4-1 home win on Sunday are 28/1.

The only problem for the hosts is that when they have lost in 2001-02 they haven’t scored so they can’t afford to fall behind. But Spurs will have to greatly improve their performance in the final third if they are to steal the points from this clash. A whopping 65% of their shots have flown wide of the mark — more than any other team in the Premiership — even if the supply has been constant.

Hoddle’s side are the third-most accurate crossers in the division having found a white shirt with 30% of their deliveries from the flanks. Newcastle will have to swiftly close down the Spurs wide men to prevent this threat and attempt to register their third successive Premiership win over the Lilywhites.

All eyes will be on the man in the mask this weekend - the big question is whether or not Goran Bunjevcevic will return to action in a special protective mask at Newcastle.

'Bunje' played for the first time in the mask on his comeback game for the reserves on Tuesday a month after fracturing his cheekbone in the Premiership clash against Chelsea.

He completed 90 minutes against West Ham and has trained again wearing the mask since.

But he admitted it was slightly uncomfortable and Glenn Hoddle revealed: "Goran played a reserve game against West Ham with the mask on and he found it difficult.

"He said he wanted to train without it but I told him he needs to keep it on because of the precautionary side of things - if he gets a whack it could set him back a long way. We can't take that risk.

"I have to sit down with the doctor and decide which is the best way forward for Goran. He still needs a little more football.

"He will probably be in the squad though and there is a possibility he might come into the frame."

Glenn reported that Gus Poyet and Les Ferdinand has been hit by a touch of 'flu but both are expected to be okay for Sunday's televised affair at St James' Park.

Meanwhile, Newcastle winger Laurent Robert has returned from compassionate leave and will be available on Sunday.

Robert has reported for a private training session with fitness coach Paul Winsper and will now have two days to prepare himself.

Meanwhile, full-back Andy Griffin could return to action against Glenn Hoddle's men after finally shaking off the groin strain which kept him out of the 1-0 Worthington Cup win at Barnsley and last Saturday's trip to the Reebok Stadium.
