New star steps on the Gaz

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Gary Doherty is hoping first impressions last — and that he can nail down a regular first team spot at Spurs.

The Irish youngster’s full debut was somewhat overshadowed by a terrible performance at Ipswich Town last weekend. Chances were few and far between as Doherty toiled away up front without reward.

But his full debut at the Lane against Newcastle United on Tuesday night was a different story.

Underlining his versatility by lining up in a three-man central defence, the 20-year-old bagged his first goal at the club and showed just why he is now being tipped for a lengthy stay in the side in his favoured defensive slot.

As well as his goal — a bullet header into the top corner to crucially level the scores - Doherty took few prisoners defensively and looked composed on the ball as he picked out passes from the back.

“Nothing went for us at Ipswich,” said the former Luton star. “I played up front but didn’t really enjoy it, things didn’t go well for me but against Newcastle things went well from the start.

“Obviously we went a goal down but from there getting the goal gave me confidence and I thought I played quite well from there.

“Hopefully I’ll be buckled in at centre-back now alongside Chris Perry and Sol.

“Alton Thelwell and Luke Young are still to come back but hopefully I’ve done enough to keep my place for Saturday and I’ll try to cement my place there.

“I said all along I wanted to be involved in the first team by Christmas but I was involved in squads before that. It’s good to be in the squad but you always want to be in the first eleven. It was a great day for me really.”

As for that goal — proof dreams can come true. “It was an unbelievable feeling,” he admitted.

“You always think in your dreams what it would be like to score in front of a packed house at White Hart Lane and I knew it was in as soon as I headed it.

“I then went off on some silly celebration — I didn’t know what I was doing to be honest. I was just happy with the goal.”
