David Pleat reflected that the addition of Gus Poyet and Fredi Kanoute to the starting line-up against Manchester City offered the team a different dimension from recent games.
The height, stealth and power of the duo posed the visitors a number of problems, with Gus a constant threat in the air and Fredi a tall, mobile target who held the ball up superbly and linked well with goalscorer Jermain Defoe.
"Yes, absolutely right, we played a bit more direct in the first half," considered the acting boss, who revealed Robbie Keane was left out to give him a break after featuring in many games this term for club and country. "In the second period we passed the ball a bit better and played a bit more of a steady game.
"Kanoute playing with Defoe was an interesting selection for us and might have produced more goals. Poyet, at his grand old age, might have had a hat-trick and he did particularly well in the air.
"I took him off and afterwards he said I was right. I was worried about taking him off as he had a big influence in the air and marked Sibierski, who is good for them in the air. Poyet was magnificent, everything we asked him to do he did superbly."
