A night to remember
Only one song really takes me back to 'the moment'. I had to drive to Rugby straight after the witnessing the amazing UEFA Cup win against Anderlecht and I switched on the radio, can’t remember which station it was, as soon as I got on to M25.
The DJ's voice came over with something like 'and now for all Spurs fans everywhere I think this next record sums it all up'. And he played 'A night to remember' by Shalamar.
I still get a tingle whenever I hear the track and my mind goes back to the penalty shoot out, and all that went before. It works the other way round as well, Graham Roberts was on the radio recently talking about how special that match was to him as he was captain and, of course, scored the goal on the night and the first penalty. As I listened to him I started thinking about the song. Am I normal??
Have a Nice Day
My favourite has to be 'Have a Nice Day' by the Stereophonics. It was the song played by the BBC at the end of the Liverpool-Arsenal cup final 3 years ago where arsenal had lead for most of the game and Michael Owen scored two in the last 10-15 minutes to snatch it from the south Londoners. Happy memories and that song summed it up nicely!
The tune that always sticks in my mind is the 'Ossie's Going To Wembley' song that evokes memories of that fantastic FA Cup Final replay against Manchester City in 1981.I was privileged to be present at both matches and Ricardo Villa’s solo winning goal remains the highlight of 42 years as a Spurs supporter. It will only be eclipsed for me when a Spurs captain lifts the Premiership trophy.
We are the Champions
We are the Champions by Queen has to be one stands out for me, even though I don't believe it to be the best song in the world. What makes this song stick out and the hairs stand up on the back of my neck is the way that we sang it one away match.
The occasion was Notts Forest away in our 1st game of the season in our comeback year to the top flight after a year in the second division. I was about 16 then and there was about 12,000 of us crammed into the away stand, we couldn't move that day as Forest had packed us into a terrace that was smaller than our numbers.
It was also one of the hottest days I could remember, made worse by the squeeze and people were fainting from the heat. Then the mighty Spurs come out on to the pitch and, almost to a man, women and child, the whole terrace burst into song in tune with the stadium radio.
I felt 10 feet tall after that and it is one moment I will never forget at a match.
