Nabil's eyes opened by support on tour

02 June 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Our incredible welcome and support in Malaysia and Australia made quite an impression on Nabil Bentaleb.

The young midfielder who broke into the first team squad in December, 2013, was on his first tour with the club after missing out on our visit to the USA last summer while he was on World Cup duty with Algeria.

Academy graduate Nabil, 21, played a starring role in both matches and particularly impressed lining-up in a less familiar left-back role again when we faced Sydney FC on Saturday.

The 1-0 victory against the A-League side in the AIA Cup brought the curtain down on a tour to remember, a tour that started with a rousing reception from Malaysia Spurs at the team’s hotel and ended with over 70,000 fans packed into the famous ANZ Stadium.

“That was an unbelievable crowd,” said Nabil after the win at the home of the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

“We had such a great welcome in Malaysia and then Australia and the people have been so good to us. The chance to play in front of over 70,000 fans was extra motivation for us. We wanted to put on a show for them.

“We know how big the club is but it really hits home when you go to the other end of the world and you see there are so many people supporting us. It really opens your eyes, to be honest.”
