Mousa's Belgian battle

05 November 2015|Tottenham Hotspur

Belgian international Mousa Dembele admits it’s a rarity for him to face teams from his home nation these days, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be any less determined to win when we welcome Anderlecht to White Hart Lane in Europa League Group J this evening!

A Premier League campaigner with us and Fulham since 2010, our defeat to Anderlecht in the reverse fixture a fortnight ago represented the midfielder’s first meeting with a Belgian side since he visited Standard Liege during his final season with AZ Alkmaar back in 2009-10.

The 28-year-old still remembers that Champions League encounter, which ended all square at 1-1, but, while he’s always happy to test himself against teams from his home country, he says he’s fully focused on taking maximum points against Anderlecht tonight in a bid to exact revenge for our defeat in Brussels on matchday three.

“Before two weeks ago it was a long time since I last played a team from Belgium – in fact I’ve almost never played one!” said Mousa.

“I remember one time against Standard Liege but that was when I was 22 so it’s very nice to have a chance to play against Anderlecht, but of course it’s an important game for us and we just want to win.

“In the first 20 minutes in the away game they didn’t have a lot of threats and it felt like their first goal came from nowhere – then their confidence was sky high.

“We have to get some revenge from last time so we need to win well with a good attitude and a good performance.

“If we make a quick start we can hopefully have a good evening and build some more momentum going into the next game against Arsenal.”
