Model profesional Jan deserved goal - Mauricio

He might have teased him about an own goal, but no-one was happier than Mauricio Pochettino to see Jan Vertonghen end his goal drought against AFC Wimbledon on Sunday.
As Jan pointed out, it’s his job to keep goals out - but after scoring six in his first season back in 2012-13 and his last against FC Sheriff in the Europa League in October, 2013, he was certainly due one!
Since then, it’s been a case of so near, so far for the Belgian defender with a couple of ‘goals’ lost to the dubious goals panel.
But there was nothing dubious about his 30-yarder against AFC Wimbledon, a sweet strike into the top corner to seal a 3-0 win and see us into the fourth round of the FA Cup. We now face a trip to Newport County, conquerors of Leeds, on a date to be confirmed (fourth round will be played between 26-29 January).
“It was good for Jan and he deserved it,” said Mauricio, who was whispering ‘own goal, own goal’ behind the camera as Jan was being interviewed for Spurs TV.
“No (it wasn’t an) own goal! If you want to score you need to believe and to shoot. He believed, he shot and he has a great shot. He needs to do that more because he can score more.”
Mauricio further complimented Jan on completing every minute of our three games in five days against Swansea, West Ham and AFC Wimbledon.
He added: “To play three games in a short period speaks very highly about how professional he is.”
Jan said: “I've had a couple of goals taken off me and I've been in the position a couple of times and been unlucky so I tried from a bit more distance - I'm happy to score a goal again.”
