Mission accomplished for Andros

16 October 2013|Tottenham Hotspur

Andros Townsend says it’s “mission accomplished” after he helped England book their place at next summer’s World Cup finals in Brazil.

Our exciting winger followed up on last Friday’s man of the match performance on his Three Lions debut with another stellar display on Tuesday night, as Roy Hodgson’s men got the points they needed to guarantee their place on the plane next summer, by way of a 2-0 win over Poland.

But the down-to-earth 22-year-old isn’t letting the success of the past few days go to his head, and he insists the hard work starts now as English players from up and down the country begin their bid to secure a place in Hodgson’s squad for the showpiece tournament finals in 2014.

“Obviously I was pleased to get my second cap, but the main thing was getting England to the World Cup next year, and it’s mission accomplished,” he said.

“It’s now down to the players to go back to their clubs and keep playing well, and force their way into the squad.”

Andros was joined in the England squad this week by Jermain Defoe and Kyle Walker, and our wing wizard says the chance to continue his blossoming right-sided partnership with right-back Kyle on the international stage played a significant part in what was a dream start to his senior international career.

“Kyle was fantastic, every game I’ve played with Kyle this season we’ve built up that understanding of playing together and it was no different with England.

“I think we linked up quite well. I’m grateful that we have that partnership for club and country.”
