Kasey Keller has explained that while most countries go to the World Cup just hoping to win, the USA had a two-pronged mission in Japan and South Korea.
The great battle that US 'soccer' always faces is getting into the mainstream of sport culture back home.
So the fact that their exploits in the World Cup - where their run to the quarter-final included wins over Portugal and Mexico - won a telephone call direct to their hotel from the President shows that 2002 was mission accomplished.
Spurs keeper Kasey explained: "The tournament has been great for us and hopefully we'll ride that for a while and see where it takes us.
"The big problem in the US is that there is always something big around the corner. The American Football season starts soon so all the attention will turn to that.
"We have to accept that but if we've managed to win a few more fans, to get more interest in the MLS (Major League Soccer) and get a few more fans watching then we'll have succeeded.
"I want there to be a successful professional football league when I finally return home but in the US, it takes success to make that step. Hopefully what we achieved will help that."
