Tom Carroll was a late substitute for Swansea City in their 2-1 Capital One Cup defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday night.

The midfielder stepped off the bench in the 88th minute at Anfield, shortly after Mario Balotelli had cancelled out Marvin Emnes’ opener.

Dejan Lovren then won it for the hosts in the 90th minute as the Swans finished with 10 men.

Elsewhere, Shaq Coulthirst scored for a young Southend United side in a 4-2 Essex Senior Cup reverse against Harlow Town. Shaq, one of four first team players in the Shrimpers’ starting line-up, played 61 minutes.

Lewis Holtby, meanwhile, played 90 minutes for Hamburg as they lost 3-1 at home to Bundesliga rivals Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup on Wednesday evening.
