Ryan Fredericks held his nerve to convert his spot kick for Middlesbrough in an amazing penalty shootout at Liverpool on Tuesday night.

Our on-loan defender started for Boro in their Capital One Cup third round tie at Anfield, playing the full 120 minutes as the game went to extra time before firing home from the spot as the resulting shootout went the distance – Liverpool ultimately winning 14-13.

With the scores level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, the hosts took the lead in the additional period and seemed to be heading into the draw for the fourth round as the end of stoppage time in extra time approached.

But a last-gasp penalty converted by Patrick Bamford forced the shootout, with both sides needing 15 kicks each before Liverpool finally made it through. Ryan took Boro’s eighth kick, firing right-footed into the bottom corner. Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet got his fingertips to it but Ryan wasn’t to be denied.

Elsewhere in the competition, Tom Carroll started for Swansea City as they secured a 3-0 home win over Everton. The 22-year-old midfielder was withdrawn with 20 minutes remaining.

On the continent, Tomislav Gomelt was an unused substitute for Bari as they lost 1-0 at Vicenza in Italy’s Serie B.

On Wednesday evening, Lewis Holtby played 90 minutes for Hamburg as they lost 1-0 at Borussia Monchengladbach in Germany’s Bundesliga.
