Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur

Middlesbrough return to action following their victorious conquest at Manchester United last Saturday. Alen Boksic's early goal was enough to give Boro a famous win - their second in just over three years at Old Trafford, and not too many teams can boast a record like that.

The three points lifted Steve McClaren's side into the top half of the table and they will want to build on that magnificent result with another victory to take them over the magical 40 point mark. But visitors Tottenham will be no pushovers after having their confidence boosted with a 2-0 win at Fulham last Sunday to end a run of four consecutive defeats.

Spurs have lost just once on their previous five visits to the Riverside and with two wins in the north-east already this season will fancy their chances of completing the full set at Middlesbrough.

Glenn Hoddle's team will hope to enjoy the majority of possession after using the ball more productively than Boro this season. Only Manchester United have made more successful passes than Tottenham in the opposition half this season, but then we know what Boro did to such high-quality passers last weekend.

Robbie Mustoe and Paul Ince were fantastic in the heart of the midfield at Old Trafford. Chasing and harassing United all over the park, they offered good protection to the Boro's defence with their non-stop commitment and endeavour.

And just behind the midfield pair were defensive rocks Gareth Southgate and Ugo Ehiogu who made 30 blocks and clearances between them to snuff out the threat of Ruud van Nistelrooy and former Boro target Diego Forlan.

However Boro should be more of an attacking force on their home turf and they will hope to find their range against a Spurs team that had conceded 13 goals in four games prior to Sunday's trip to Craven Cottage.

Loan ranger Benito Carbone will aim to keep up his good form and win himself a permanent contract with the Teessiders. The little Italian set-up Alen Boksic for the winner last week when he robbed Juan Sebastian Veron and laid the ball into the path of the Croatian.

Carbone may be a good bet to open the scoring on Saturday by netting his first goal at the Riverside, but Spurs with former Boro man Christian Ziege making his first return will be eager to keep only their fourth clean sheet on the road this season.

This game may not be a classic for the television audience but it is vitally important for both teams as they seek to end the season as far up the table as they possibly can.
