Mendes on Mourinho

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Pedro Mendes explained that key to the success of new Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is the relationships forged with his players.

Our midfielder enjoyed a stunning season at Porto under the leadership of the now Stamford Bridge supremo, winning the Portuguese League and then the Champions League final against Monaco in Gelsenkirchen.

He is now preparing to meet up once again with his former coach in Sunday's televised encounter, a coach he understandably rates very highly and one he reveals certainly does his homework on opposition teams.

"He is a fantastic person and a fantastic coach," said Pedro, who has made a positive impact himself on Premiership football. "He trains players very well, is very clever and studies the opponents very closely.

"For sure he will know our team perfectly at this time and will know the way we play. He will work with his team this week to play against us.

"The players like playing for him and he communicates very well and gives a lot of confidence. It is a very good relationship he has with players so it is normal that his teams almost always win because of that relationship - it shows on the pitch."

Pedro agreed that his former boss has enjoyed a meteoric rise since entering the top flight football arena as Sir Bobby Robson's interpreter in Portugal, but says it was Mourinho's ability to learn from such a figure that has stood him in such good stead.

"He worked with some of the best coaches in Europe - Louis Van Gaal and Bobby Robson - learned a lot from them and he is very clever. Then when he had the chance to become a principal manager he did wonderful work at Benfica and Porto. I think his work speaks for him."

Mourinho has received some mixed coverage since introducing himself to the English media following Porto's Champions League triumph - declaring himself a 'special' coach. Pedro says this type of briefing is not unusual, but surprising only to those not familiar with the Mourinho mantra.

"He has a very particular personality and people might just not know him yet. Even in Portugal he did some press conferences that surprised people, but just people who don't know him."

THE PORTUGUESE CONNECTION - Pedro gives us a brief run-down on his compatriots in opposition on Sunday

Paulo Ferreira
A wonderful player, it is fantastic the way he runs for 90 minutes up and down the right wing. He is good defender with a good cross - a very good player.

Ricardo Carvalho
Very fast and a very good defender. He has great anticipation, fast to the ball and cuts out danger early. I think he is suited to the English game, he had a wonderful Champions League and was amazing in Euro 2004. He is good player and will get used to English football without any problem.

I played with him for the under-21s, a fantastic player also and, for Benfica he was the best player in the last two seasons. He deserves this move and he will be an important player.
