Memories of '91
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
You clearly sense the 'seize the day' mentality of '91 hero Paul Stewart when he reflects on how thay May day's events unfolded at Wembley Stadium.
Just in case you need reminding, key man Paul Gascoigne was stretchered off with a then-career threatening knee injury, Forest took a 1-0 lead and we managed to miss a penalty and have a goal disallowed all in the first half.
But this clearly wasn't the day to feel sorry for ourselves, as Paul expained. "Everyone was gutted when Paul went down and had to leave the field but my thoughts were that you might never get another chance to play in a big game like this so you either lie down and get beaten or give it your best shot to get back into it. I think we all did that."
How true. Paul, who hit the third round winner at Blackpool, played a bigger part than most with the crucial equaliser before Des Walker's own goal handed us a 2-1 win and the trophy.
"Apart from the obvious disappointment with Paul the rest of the day couldn't have gone better, especially for myself," added Paul, still a larger than life character today.
"I thought that we were always playing well enough to get back into the game. We could have started thinking that it wasn't our day with the penalty and goal disallowed but I don't believe anyone thought that."
So Paul lived the dream, scoring in an FA Cup Final under the famous Twin Towers. "Once you are in that situation things happen so quickly you don't really have time to take it in," he added.
"It happens, it's part of your life but when you step back after a few years you think 'that was good, I enjoyed that'. I don't know what it's like today but certainly in our era we didn't really have the chance to savour it.
"It was every boy's dream to play at Wembley in an FA Cup Final and win. Luckily enough for me it happened and to score the goal and receive the man of the match award, it was the perfect day." Thousands of Spurs fans there on day and watching across the world couldn't have put it better.
