Mauritius here we come
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
The players depart for Mauritius this evening with a strong squad for a brief end-of-season tour that includes a friendly against the island's national team on Friday.
Ledley King, Jermain Defoe, Robbie Keane and Michael Carrick - recently recalled to the England squad - all travel on the trip that will mark the end of our season 2004-05 campaign.
We take on the Mauritius at the Anjalay Stadium on Friday while the tour also includes an autograph and photo session and a visit to a local school.
Sporting Director Frank Arnesen will also run the rule over the nation's under-17 players to scout for a youth prospect who will get to spend six weeks training within our Academy set-up.
Head Coach Martin Jol commented: "I'm sure the match against the Mauritius national team will be a real challenge for us.
"Players and coaches always benefit from coming up against different styles of football and we’re all looking forward to it."
Ranked 143 in the world, Mauritius just missed out on reaching the second round of qualifying in the African zone of the 2006 World Cup when they lost 4-3 on aggregate to Uganda after taking the tie to extra time.
They first entered the 1974 FIFA World Cup, going down 3-1 in Kenya before holding the East Africans to a 1-1 draw in the return leg. The next time they competed at the highest level was Mexico '86, when Malawi proved too strong, winning both matches. Zaire was the stumbling block at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, while Egypt got the better of Mauritius in the qualifying competition for Korea/Japan '02.
And although Mauritius were knocked out again at the first hurdle this time around, they will take some comfort from the fact that not only did they win their first FIFA World Cup match, they also came within a Golden Goal of advancing to the second round.
The tour is being sponsored by Imbel travel and Air Mauritius.
