Mauricio sets his sights

English Barclays Premiership

Mauricio Taricco will strive for improvement on both personal and team fronts next season. Our Argentinian defender reckons he has more to offer despite his consistent displays at left-back last time around. He also believes we have to aim for the top six at least next term after finishing 11th in the Premiership in 1999-2000.

George Graham's first signing, in November 1998, Taricco explained: "A player always takes time to settle when he joins a new club and new set of players. Once he has settled, you will then start to see the best of that player. You could say now that I'm settled quite a lot.

"I would still like to improve more, especially going forward. I was very attack-minded at Ipswich and involved in a lot of goals. I would like to play more like that at Tottenham."

The early arrival of Sergei Rebrov and Neil Sullivan this summer led to a real sense of optimism amongst fans and Taricco is happy to ride that wave. "I agree that there is a feeling that good times are around the corner," he said.

"Hopefully we will have less injuries and we have a few experienced players coming back to fitness as well, like Les Ferdinand. That is vital for the squad and will give everyone a lift.

"Last season didn't go as well as we all hoped and now we have to aim for the top six, without question. We must qualify for a place in the UEFA Cup again.

"Everyone was disappointed last season but if we can make that top six and do better in the cup competitions, I'm sure that would give everyone a smile."
