Mauricio on options in APOEL

25 September 2017|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino spoke about ‘a collective effort’ as we prepare to face APOEL in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

Christian Eriksen was a late withdrawal from the trip to Cyprus after feeling ill on Sunday night.

The in-form playmaker joins suspended duo Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen on the sidelines, alongside Mousa Dembele (ankle), Victor Wanyama (knee) and long-term absentees Danny Rose and Erik Lamela.

Mauricio was asked how the team would deal with the loss of Christian at his pre-match press conference in Nicosia on Monday evening.

"It’s true we’ll miss Christian but we have to move on,” he said. “We have a strong squad and we have to find a way to perform well and try to win the game.

"I’m not a manager who will cry because some players cannot play. It’s about the team, the squad and a collective effort.

“Of course you always miss players who are injured or ill because you want everyone available. It’s a bit of a shame but it’s important we deal with that in the best way, try to perform well and try to win.”

Mauricio hinted that Harry Winks might come into the frame. Asked if the midfielder could get his chance, he added: “Maybe, yes he can start.

“Saturday was tough and today is the second day of recovery so we cannot do too much tonight here, just assess everyone and then pick the best starting 11 for tomorrow. It’s one possibility that Harry will start.”
