Mauricio on Champions League draw: 'It's a good opportunity'

25 August 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Mauricio Pochettino was full of optimism as he digested our Champions League group stage draw this evening (Thursday, August 25).

Our Argentine boss watched on television at Hotspur Way as we were placed in Group E along with Russia champions CSKA Moscow, German side Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco, who we met in the Europa League last season.

As he embarks on his first campaign at Europe's top table as a manager, in which we'll play our home games at Wembley Stadium, Mauricio emphasised that our upcoming continental quest represents a special challenge for players, staff and supporters alike.

"It’s true that we’re all motivated to play in the Champions League, the best competition in the world," he said.

"All players dream of one day playing in the Champions League and it’s a good opportunity for us to challenge the best teams in Europe.

"It will be a special moment at Wembley for our supporters. It’s an opportunity to show our quality and a good time to enjoy as well. It’s important to play in the Champions League for our club and for our supporters as well. We need to be ready to compete and at the same time, enjoy it."

Mauricio on CSKA Moscow

"We know very well that Russia is always difficult and CSKA are sure to have a very good team. For now though, we need to learn about the team and to have more information. It’s true that in Russia it's a tough competition and I’m sure they will be a very tough team. We’ll see what happens."

Mauricio on Bayer Leverkusen

"The Bundesliga is one of the best leagues in the world and all the teams are very competitive. Last season we played Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League and we can see how competitive German teams are. Bayer Leverkusen will be tough as well."

Mauricio on Monaco

"We know Monaco well. There have been some changes there but the same manager (since we played them last year). Again, it’s tough. It’s the Champions League and it will always be a tough competition."
