Matty up to speed

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Matthew Etherington appeared to have added a turbo to his engine against Lazio and he's not quite sure why he's picked up a bit of speed.

Our young leftie had the crowd roaring with approval on Sunday as he tormented his marker with blistering pace and no little skill during a captivating first half.

Asked afterwards if he had gained a couple more yards of pace, he replied that a number of people have mentioned it.

"A few people have been saying - I can't really notice to be honest with you," said Matty. "Everyone is saying I look quicker than I have done but I've not done anything different.

"I don't know, it is something that just seems to have come to me."

Matty had every reason to be happy with his performance against the Italians, a chance to plant himself in the manager's mind for the coming season.

"I was pleased with how it went, I got my chance and it went well for me.

"It went well first half, we came out strong and they managed to get the ball out to me. I've been feeling sharp all pre-season and it was a case of bringing it on to a bigger stage against a great team like Lazio.

"It has given me a lot of confidence."

Glenn was equally happy with his first half performance, but says work is going in on Matty's final deleivery.

"Matty did excellent in the first half, he was up for it and gave the full-back a lot of problems," commented the boss.

"He made good intelligent runs, we've been trying to work on him to do that, and he showed good movement.

"The last bit of his work, his crossing, needs to be improved.

"He was a little bit flat in the second half, we didn't get the ball out to him as much and his movement stopped a bit.

"Matthew hasn't had many games at that tempo and level this pre-season and I think fatigue came in, believe it or not for a youngster, but he's trying to catch up at that sort of level and is maybe why in the second half he dropped a bit.

"The first 45 minutes he was excellent."

Matty does not disagree with the fact that he needs to produce a more consistent end product and will use Christian Ziege as a role model.

"Definitely, the gaffer has told me this before. I have to look at Christian Ziege - his final ball is superb and he's got a great left foot on him.

"If I can put that side of my game right I'll be okay."
