Matty happy to get the call
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Matthew Etherington says it was 'a pleasure' to be involved in the latest England U21 squad, even though he didn't feature in Euro 2004 qualifiers against Portugal and Turkey.
Indeed, with a 25-man squad named, the speedy winger took some consolation from making it onto the substitutes' bench for both games.
David Platt's team lost 4-2 in Portugal last Friday before a 1-1 draw against Turkey at Newcastle United on Tuesday.
"It was good to be back in the squad," insisted Matty on his return to Spurs Lodge this week. "There are some really good players in there and it was a pleasure to be part of it.
"I would have liked to have played but it was a squad of 25 and I was at least on the bench. There were a lot of players who play week in, week out who didn't make it onto the bench.
"It was nice to be involved, I would have liked to have played a few minutes but it didn't happen, that's the way it goes.
"It was good to hook up, 10 days away and good to get to know a few of the lads.
"We've left it tough to qualify. It's between ourselves, Turkey and Portugal and there will be big games in the summer and at the start of the next season."
Matty is now hoping to play a part in Saturday's Premiership clash a against Birmingham City at the Lane.
"Hopefully I'll feature and it would be great to be involved," said Matty who, like his team-mates, is expecting a battle.
"They scrap for their lives and that's what we're expecting. That's how they get their results.
"It's a big game for us. We need to put four or five wins together to be in with a realistic chance. That can be done but we have to win on Saturday."
