Matty: Good to be back
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Matthew Etherington was delighted to be back in the first team frame against Chelsea at the weekend.
The speedy winger endured a frustrating spell with an ankle injury sustained against Burnley in the Worthington Cup back in early November. He featured for 45 minutes against Arsenal at Highbury ten days later before accepting that the bone bruising he suffered needed a longer period of recovery.
He made his return for the reserves against Wimbledon on January 6 and has since bided his time waiting for a first team opportunity to arise again.
His chance came in the 79th minute at Stamford Bridge with the outcome in the balance at one goal apiece. His introduction sparked a spell of Spurs pressure and Matty himself had a late chance to secure the points.
"It went well for me," he reflected. "I felt sharp enough and had a chance at the end. It was a bit tight, maybe could have done a bit better, but I felt good and it was good to be back again.
"It was good to come on with the game in the balance and poised. There was a bit of pressure on me because we didn't want to lose the game, but we could have nicked it in the end.
"I think I gave us a bit of extra urgency up front and we did have a few little chances."
Matty revealed that he relied on the old maxim 'hit the target' when it came to his shot at the end.
"I can't really remember that much of it. I know Gus nicked it past Melchiot and I think it was coming at pace. If I had caught it on my laces I think it would have gone in the stand.
"People always say hit the target and I hit it as well as I could, but he made a good save and it's one of those things.
"It was a good result for us - we don't always get a point there. We played well in the first half, they put us under a bit in the second and I thought we dealt with it well. It was good."
