Matt's back for the future?
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Matthew Etherington is hoping that adding versatility to his game is the key to catching the eye of Glenn Hoddle ahead of the new season.
On arrival from Peterborough, Matty was considered an out-and-out winger, something of a throwback to days gone by — a natural left-footer hugging the touchline and taking on opposing full-backs.
Towards the end of last season and in the friendly game at Stevenage, Matty was detailed to fill the left wing-back role — and he is pretty content with his performance.
"I did okay," he pondered. "I was pleased with how I went in a new-ish position for me and the manager wanted to see how I coped with it as a wing-back.
"I thought it went all right, so maybe it’s another thing I can handle, so it’s matter of doing as well as I can this pre-season and putting my name in Glenn’s mind and seeing what happens."
Matty’s game has always been about attacking instincts, employing speed and trickery to beat his man and open up the game. The wing-back role requires a degree of the defensive hard yards — a side of his game Matt is seeking to better.
"I wouldn’t say it’s brilliant," he admitted. "But it’s improving by the week when I come into the training ground and I’ve improved in the 18 months or so I’ve been here.
"I feel as though I can play there. I played there a few times for the reserves last year and did all right."
