Matt shines but must finish

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Matthew Etherington was the pick of an eye-catching bunch during an impressive second half showing by the reserves on Tuesday evening when Southampton travelled home with nothing more than two entries in the goals against column for their efforts.

Etherington gave his marker such a torrid time during the second period that he was withdrawn to save him and his team from further punishment.

Our recruit from Peterborough had a hand in both goals, the second came directly from his left wing cross, but Matt is well aware that he could have more than doubled the scoreline himself.

“Definitely, I should have had a couple of goals but they’ll go in another day,” said the leftie who admits that a comparison with the skills of Steve McManaman would be more accurate than those of Gary Lineker.

“I’ve got to work on my finishing without a doubt, I should score more goals than I do. It’s something to work on.

Etherington appears to have a handle on the demands of reserve team football and will be seeking another opportunity to impress with the first team after his only start against Brentford in the Worthington Cup at Griffin Park.

“I think I’ve been doing well in the reserves and I’m happy with my form. I had a chance at Brentford in the first team and it didn’t go as well as it could have done for me, but after that I think I’ve responded well.”

David Pleat commented in his programme notes that he couldn’t understand why Etherington’s perfomance for the first team did not match up to those for the second string.

“It was one of those nights, it was a tough game, wet night and it just didn’t go for me. I’m doing all I can in the reserves at the minute and I’ll keep plugging away and hopefully I’ll get my chance.”
