Matt bides his time
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Matthew Etherington’s Premiership dream hasn’t quite materialised yet.
The young winger, still just 19, has featured just twice on the bench this season and made one start in the Worthington Cup at Brentford.
He admits his failure break through is getting to him slightly but attitude-wise he remains spot on.
“It would get to anyone to be honest,” he said. “It does play at the back of my mind but at the end of the day I have to look where I am, at Tottenham Hotspur, it’s a big club and you have to get on with it.”
Etherington knows if he performs in the reserves he’ll have a chance — just look at Alton Thelwell — so when he pitches up at St Albans to take on West Ham in the FA Premier Reserve League South on Tuesday night (7.30pm) he'll treat it exactly the same as his debut for Spurs at Anfield last season.
He added: “I think I’m playing reasonably well at the minute and I’m happy with my form. I’ve been in the squad with the first team and travelled to most of the games but not quite broken through to the bench yet.
“That is a bit disappointing but I have to keep plugging away, do what I’m doing in the reserves and hopefully I’ll get my chance soon.
“I’m happy with my form in the reserves and it hasn’t been hard to lift myself for those games. I’m happy with the way it’s going and I just got to bide my time. Hopefully then I’ll do well if I do get a chance, and I’ll go from there.”
