HARRY REDKNAPP'S COLUMN
West Brom programme, January 3, 2012
A Happy New Year to everyone and a warm welcome back to White Hart Lane for our first fixture of 2012.
There were chances at both ends in our most recent game here against Chelsea. We started well and were on top for the opening 25 minutes. We got the goal we deserved but then Chelsea equalised against the run of play and then they came back into it.
We could have won it in the end when the ball somehow stayed out from Emmanuel Adebayor’s effort but overall a draw was probably a fair result.
The fans that went to Carrow Road a week ago saw us play some fantastic football.
It was a big game for us because the results had gone our way over the Christmas period and we had to make the best use of that by picking up maximum points against Norwich City.
I was surprised to see so many of our rivals drop points but it just shows you how difficult it is to pick up results in this league.
I thought we controlled the game in the first half - there was some real quality about our play. We just had to stay patient and keep moving the ball around. We had chances in the first half when we did that and that is how we continued after the break. We kept the ball, waited for our openings and eventually the goals came courtesy of Gareth Bale.
Gareth is an amazing talent and he has got everything in his locker. Once he starts to run, like he did for our second goal, you know there is no catching him.
We welcome Roy Hodgson’s West Bromwich Albion to the Lane this afternoon.
Roy obviously did a great job at Fulham and he has continued that at West Brom as we knew he would do. He has got them well-drilled and organised and we know it will be a tough game today. They are in good form having won their last two away games and only recently took points off Man City.
We are all looking forward to the second half of the season after making such a fantastic start, despite losing our first two games. To come back from that as we did, I couldn’t be more pleased and to be sitting here, at the time of writing, with 38 points from 17 games is a fantastic total.
We have just got to continue turning in performances and picking up points as we have done already and then see where we finish.
We want to get back into the Champions League, that’s the first step for us. We’ve got a great squad, good players who want to do well and we are all optimistic about the future.
Enjoy the game.
