Match Report - Leicester City reserves v Tottenham reserves - 12 Aug 2003
FA Premier Reserve League South
Jamie Slabber did the trick again at the Walkers Stadium - grabbing the equaliser as we kicked-off our FA Premier Reserve League campaign with a hard-fought draw against Leicester City.
This magnificent arena must already be his favourite away ground in the Premiership in what is only a fledgling career.
Back in April, he delightfully chipped home from the edge of the box for one of the reserve goals of last season.
And after an impressive pre-season he was straight back into goalscoring form in this league opener - lashing home into the bottom corner from 22 yards to level the scores just before the break.
A half-time deficit would have been harsh on the lads after they played most of the football while the home side relied on hitting long diagonal balls aiming for wingers Paul Brooker and Jordan Stewart.
Obviously, possession in those areas can lead to chances, free-kicks and corners and the Foxes are deadly at set-peices.
A couple had come to nothing but it worked for them again after 37 minutes when Williamson's corner was headed down by Priet and Benjamin bundled over from close range.
It was reward for the home side's best spell which started with Stewart dragging the ball wide one-on-one after 27 minutes and a decent Curtis free-kick grasped by Sullivan.
Undetered, we hit back just before half-time when referee Mr Shoebridge waved a great play-on following a shove on Acimovic, the ball ran on to Slabber who turned away from one man before hitting low into the corner.
It was a deserved equaliser after Barnard's volley had earlier brought a fine save out of Coyne and Jackson's corner struck a post.
City created their best two chances at the start of the second half.
Within a couple of minutes Brooker laid the ball into Larvin whose fierce drive from 10 yards was turned away well by Sullivan and a minute later, Sullivan was there again, angles perfect, as Brooker dragged his shot wide from eight yards.
Colin Calderwood was forced into an early change when Dean Marney, who recovered from a knock in the first half, limped out after another. He was replaced by Lee Barnett and both Paul O'Donoghue and Ronnie Henry, for Acimovic and Doherty, had arrived before the hour.
Chances continued to come as the pace of the game finally settled down an we went closest to grabbing a winner when Henry's header from Jackson's corner agonisingly hit the inside of the post and bounced to safety.
