Martin's proud of Reto
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Martin Jol feels we should be very proud of Reto Ziegler following the midfielder making his senior debut for Switzerland against France on Saturday.
The 19-year-old was given a starting place at the Stade de France in front of a near 80,000 attendance as the Swiss secured a goalless draw against the group favourites. He will now be hoping to feature again when Cyprus provide the next World Cup qualifying opposition.
"I think we can be very proud of him," said the Head Coach. "He is 19 years old, in his first year in the Premiership and has been selected.
"Don't forget, there were other players who could have played ahead of him. Magnin from Werder Bremen was on the bench, so he must have made quite an impression on his international coach.
"He is a young lad who can take a lot of pressure and I think he did well. It was a great result for Switzerland against France and, again, I think we can be proud of him."
Reto has made huge progress since arriving at the club in the close season, not forgetting that he was not originally set to join until the January window.
"Sometimes you have to take a chance and we asked Grasshoppers if we could have him a bit earlier," added Martin. "We felt he was one for the future and now he is a full international who has played at the Stade de France in front of nearly 80,000 people.
"It is a big step for him to play for an international team against a team like France. It will serve him well, it is good for his experience and I think we will have a fine player for now and the future.
"He is a skilful player with lots of talent. He started off as a full-back and we had to transform him into a midfield player where he has done well. Mentality with skill and bundles of talent is a good combination - he has this but has got to learn his trade.
"I saw that he was marking Vieira at corner kicks, we didn't do that with him as most of the time he was on the post. I think it was a very good experience for him to mark a player like that and every game for a young lad like him is an unbelievable experience."
