Magic moments for Clive

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Clive Allen doesn't need too much reminding of one of the recent glory, glory nights at the Lane - a League Cup tie against West Ham 15 years ago.

Not surprisingly, our recently recruited coach describes the season as the greatest of his life - 49 goals in all competitions are testament to that on a personal level but, unfortunately, it turned into a nearly season with third place in the league, runners-up in the FA Cup and losing semi-finalists in the League Cup.

Nevertheless, playing the now famous 4-5-1 system with the likes of Clemence, Mabbutt, Ardiles and Hoddle, it remains one of the club's most memorable seasons.

And this tie against West Ham was one of the highlights.

Playing for a place in the semi-finals against Arsenal, we drew at Upton Park before a 5-0 victory in the replay on February 2, 1987 with Clive bagging a hat-trick in nine minutes.

"I remember it well," said Clive. "It was a very close game at Upton Park which ended 1-1.

"West Ham started the replay well and actually had one or two chances and it remained close until the second half when my cousin Paul, who had a magnificent evening, went into overdrive and created a couple of goals for me in a short period of time.

"That really turned the game in our favour. I was fortunate enough to score a hat-trick and it was a memorable night although it wasn't as emphatic as the scoreline suggests.

"The hat-trick was eight or nine minutes and apart from a game against Norwich where I did the same, it was the quickest I scored a hat-trick in my career."

As for the season, Clive added: "It was the greatest season in my life, definitely.

"It was one of those situations where I knew, no matter how I was playing, that I'd get chances. The supply was coming in from everywhere.

"It was a joy and what dreams are made of.

"In your career you hope to play in a team that creates the chances the way those lads did and I was in the form in terms of putting the ball in the back of the net."
