Mabbsy drops in to support Foundation’s stop smoking clinic

28 November 2016|Tottenham Hotspur

Gary Mabbutt joined the Mayor of Haringey at the Day-Mer Community Centre to support a Tottenham Hotspur Foundation initiative that helps local people stop smoking, with a key focus on members of the local Turkish community.

The unique programme, which has been running since April, 2016, sees a Tottenham Hotspur Foundation Health Advisor – the Spurs Nurse – hold a weekly pop-up clinic at the centre in order to tackle one of Mayor Ali Gul Ozbek’s primary aims of improving health and wellbeing in the area.

So far, 90 per cent of attendees have set a quit date, 48 per cent have achieved a 28-day quit programme and 12 per cent have gone on to be smoke-free at 12 weeks.

Spurs Nurse, Ida Blake, said: “I’m delighted with the progress of our members to date and we’ve achieved so much in a short space of time. We’ve made a big effort to reach out to the local Turkish population, in particular, and the service is going from strength to strength as more people join each week.”

Mabbsy and the Mayor helped Ida prepare carbon monoxide breathalyser tests to check the progress of class members, before chatting to participants about the benefits of the programme.

Gary said: “It’s amazing to see the hard work Ida and the team are putting in and how they have positively affected the lives of local residents. We’ve seen today that the health complications associated with smoking can be devastating so hearing some of the clinic’s success stories is really inspiring.”

The Tottenham Hotspur Foundation’s programmes seek to engage hard to reach audiences in a range of preventative, rehabilitation and health improvement initiatives. The stop smoking clinic is run in conjunction with Haringey Council and free stop smoking service Quit 51.
