Luke: I was in wrong
Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).
Luke Young has admitted he was in the wrong to lose control and receive his marching orders for England Under-21s in Greece last week — but insisted frustration finally got the better of him.
The home side’s antics — a mixture of wild tackles, unpunished by the referee, and rolling around feigning injury - left a lot to be desired in the European Championship qualifier.
In the end Luke lost his temper in injury time and pushed Giorgos Theodoridis in the back after the defender backed into him. The red card was brandished straight away, John Terry soon followed him for an early bath and England trudged off on the end of a 3-1 defeat.
Football-wise there could be few complaints that Greece were the better side but their gamesmanship left its mark.
Luke said: “I thought the sending off was a bit harsh. I’ve not really seen it on video to look back on it. It all happened so quickly.
“I felt him try to elbow me. He didn’t catch me and it perhaps didn’t look that bad but he tried to elbow me in the chest or face, I pushed him in the back and he went down, rolled over everywhere and that’s what’s probably got me sent off.
“We shouldn’t really lose our cool. I shouldn’t have done what I did but I couldn’t take any more. I was so frustrated, especially with how we played. We didn’t do ourselves justice, didn’t start brightly and didn’t play at all.
“We knew how they were going to play. We’d watched videos and they did exactly the same against Germany. I suppose we fell for it.”
Luke revealed that boss Howard Wilkinson simply asked him for his version of events.
“The manager just asked me what happened,” he added. “It was in the far corner of the pitch and he couldn’t see it that well.
“I told him that he’s swung out at me, that I’d push him forward and he went down and rolled over.
“You have to learn from it. It was a number of things and I got frustrated at the end of the game and just pushed him. It wasn’t as if I’d done anything that bad. It was just disappointing.”
