Loss 'tough to take' - JD
Jermain Defoe was convinced we’d go on and win at Newcastle after he struck the equaliser with 15 minutes remaining of Saturday’s Premier League opener.
We’d had the better chances - Jermain and Gareth Bale both struck the woodwork - before Demba Ba put Newcastle ahead on 55 minutes.
We continued to press until JD fired us level 20 minutes later, pouncing on a loose ball from close range.
But the game turned against us when Hatem Ben Arfa was bundled over in the box and picked himself up to slot home the matchwinning penalty with 10 minutes left.
“I thought we were unlucky and that we were the better team,” said Jermain.
“We were patient, organised and didn’t give them anything through the middle. They didn’t have any clear-cut chances, that’s why I think we did well and were unlucky to lose.
“When I scored the equaliser, I thought we’d go on and nick it and if we won a point, so be it. It’s such a tough place to play. When they won the penalty it was tough to take.”
