Liverpool v Spurs

Liverpool, have much to play for in the closing weeks of the 2000-01 campaign. On the domestic front alone, they are challenging for the last Champions League berth and have the small matter of an FA Cup final to look forward to as well. The priority however, must be reaching third place in the Premiership, in which case a win over the Lilywhites is a must for Gerard Houllier's side.

In direct contrast to the Reds, Spurs' season is now effectively over, a fact that Glenn Hoddle freely admitted after his side's humbling midweek defeat to Chelsea. Tottenham have been knocked out of the FA Cup, are well out of contention for a UEFA Cup place and have an extensive injury list, which will make Sunday's clash at Liverpool an extremely difficult task.

Chris Perry and Sergei Rebrov both picked up knocks against Chelsea, and they are added to a long list of casualties at White Hart Lane including Sol Campbell, Les Ferdinand, Chris Armstrong, Ben Thatcher, Steffen Freund and Darren Anderton.

This means youngsters such as Alton Thelwell, Gary Doherty and Simon Davies will all be in the starting XI. And an even more inexperienced group, including striker John Piercy and winger Matthew Etherington, may well join them.

However, this is not necessarily bad news for Tottenham fans. King has been fantastic since coming into the side earlier in the season, ironically enough in the 2-1 win over Liverpool. And Davies has also shown why he was chased by some of the country's biggest clubs earlier in his fledgling career. The former Peterborough midfielder has won 83% of his challenges this term - the best ratio at Spurs - and will need to show some more of that steel if Hoddle's men are to get anything from their trip to Anfield.

Although Hoddle may feel that this is a good opportunity for him to blood some young players, there can be no doubt that he would rather be in Houllier's position. The former France boss has a plethora of options in midfield and three England internationals who can play up front.

Of the trio of Emile Heskey, Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen, it is Owen who has been the most deadly this season, scoring with 20% of his shots - the best proportion at the club. Indeed, the diminutive striker appears well capable of grabbing the opening goal in this game and should be backed at 9/2

No healthy Spurs player can come close to matching Owen in terms of finishing ability. In fact, Tottenham's best goal hope is probably Norwegian international Steffen Iversen - who has found the back of the net with just 7% of his shots - and Hoddle can only hope that the former Rosenborg forward can recover from his recent concussion in time to lead the line against the Reds.

But no matter who Hoddle picks, Liverpool should win this clash. They have home advantage, the lure of Champions League football to motivate them and a much stronger squad available for selection. Tottenham will hope that their youngster's give a performance to point to a brighter future at the Lane, but will be lucky to come away with so much as a point on Sunday.
