Les' perfect day

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

It was Les Ferdinand’s perfect day. First being named captain against Manchester United, then a goal and a win against the champions with a team of youngsters — underlining the potential that persuaded him to stay at the Lane for another two years.

Although suffering his fair share of knocks again — usually to the head — Les appeared in 28 of our 38 Premiership fixtures, scoring 10 goals.

Having showed exactly what he is capable of it was no surprise that boss Glenn Hoddle was determined to keep him at the Lane and the club was pleased to announce a new, two-year deal on Monday.

For his part, Les, 34, was delighted with the season’s finale. “A goal, a win against United and the captain’s armband as well — I couldn’t have predicted the day any better,” he beamed. “Well I suppose I could - I could have had a hat-trick!

“We did well. We thought beforehand that United might put out a young side but that wasn’t the case, it was a strong side and I thought we did well with the players we had out.

“We had a blow with Anthony Gardner going off early and then it looked like Simon Davies would have to go off as well. But overall we deserved the victory.”

Les’ fine 25-yard drive secured a memorable 3-1 win against United and took him into double-figures in the league.

“I always wanted to reach double-figures,” he said. “I wanted a few more goals but it wasn’t to be but it was nice to finish with a goal. I started with a goal and finished with one.

“The win underlines the bright future we have. I’m sure the manager will add to the squad in the close season and with what we’ve got, if we can keep hold of everyone, I’m very optimistic about what we can achieve next season.”
