Les pays his respects

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Les Ferdinand reflected that, as a lifelong supporter and ex-player, it was fitting he should be at the Lane on Saturday to pay his respects to Bill Nicholson.

The centre forward was an unused sub for Sam Allardyce's side on what you would imagine would have been his last trip to the Lane as a player - but you just never know with Les, who left us in January 2002 to go to West Ham and arrived at Bolton via a season-long stint at Leicester City.

"It was a difficult day for everyone concerned with Spurs," said Les, who will be hoping for a piece of the action tonight when we travel to the Reebok Stadium in the Carling Cup. "We all know what Bill Nicholson meant to Tottenham and it was a sad day. It was nice for me that I was there to pay my respects along with everybody else.

"It is always a shock, if it happened a week ago, everyone would have been prepared for what was happening. With it being on the day the atmosphere was a bit strange."

Les is sure that Bill will remain embedded in the fabric of the club for ever more.

"I met him on a number of occasions, at functions and there were times when he came down to meet the players. I consider myself lucky to have met him.

"He is everywhere you look at this club. When you think of what he achieved here, what he did for the club and where he bought this club to. He is cemented in the bricks and mortar here.

"His name will live forever at Tottenham Hotspur."

Les concluded by admitting he was well aware he had no chance of getting a few minutes on the pitch for sentimental reasons.

"The manager came with a good plan to frustrate Spurs and that's what we do away from home, catch teams on the break.

"Obviously I'd have loved to have got on the pitch but you understand things are going well for the team and managers have to make decisions. Sam's not about Les Ferdinand's nostalgia, more about getting results for Bolton Wanderers."
