Les on Shearer

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Alan Shearer recently described Les Ferdinand as his favourite strike partner at club level - Les is more than happy to repay the compliment.

Newcastle and England legend Shearer insisted that they 'clicked straight away' in October's FourFourTwo and 'teams couldn't handle us when we played together'.

The pair were unstoppable in their only season together, 1996-97, when they bagged 49 goals between them in finishing runners-up to Manchester United.

Les recalled: "We scored lots of goals and I saw in his interview that he suggested teams found it hard to play against us and didn't know who to pick up. That was the case. If their strongest defender went to me Alan found space and vice-versa.

"We complimented each other very well and we tried to work at the partnership but not too hard - we were never really out there on the training pitch, we were both focused on what we had to do and luckily it paid off."

Les, who know all about injuries himself, suggested Shearer's will to win and determination to succeed have helped overcome two serious knee injuries - the latest of which kept him out from March until the end of August.

"People always right him off," Les explained. "People suggest it will be the injury that takes him over the edge but I know having played with him and worked with him is that he's got this will to succeed and prove everyone wrong.

"He's done that on many occasions and he's done so again this season. He's come back and he's straight into the goals again.

"His will and desire to win and get the best out of himself and there are not many players like it, coming back from various inujuries and things that have happened and proving people wrong on many occasions.

"I remember at Newcastle he had two groin operations and he was always first in in the morning doing his exercises.

"When you've got an injury and you have to come in day in, day out to do the same exercises it becomes very mundane but he used to just get on with it and no matter what was going on around him he would always be totally focused on getting himself back as quick as possible."

Les concluded: "His record speaks for itself. Over the last decade he has probably been the best striker in this country."

Les is 15/2 to open the scoring on Sunday and that becomes 125/1 if Spurs go on to win 3-1 - click for details.
