Spurs Reserves 3 Wimbledon Reserves 0

Steffen Iversen and Les Ferdinand made successful comebacks as Chris Hughton’s reserve side deservedly beat Wimbledon on Tuesday night.

Ferdinand capped his return with a superb volley to complete the scoring in injury time.

Norwegian star Iversen has been out since October after two knee operations while Ferdinand has taken just over three weeks to return after limping off against Southampton on January 20.

The pair came on for the last 20 minutes and both looked lively in what was a comfortable win at St Albans.

Despite their late introductions pinching the spotlight all the credit for the win should go to the youngsters with wing-back Ian Hillier and Johnnie Jackson, just 18, both outstanding.

But for the occasional break Ian Walker was rarely tested in our goal and it was left to Willem Korsten, from the penalty spot, and Hillier to secure victory with a two-goal burst in a minute at the start of the second half.

Matthew Etherington caused his usual mayhem at this level and our brightest spots in a goalless first half came via the left winger. After 10 minutes he latched onto a Walker throw and ran 60 yards before squaring to Yannick Kamanan, who was swallowed up before getting a shot off.

Jackson’s snapshot was well saved by Paul Heald and Hillier fired wide when well placed.

The game was won with a two-goal spell at the start of the second half.

John Piercy was upended in the area just two minutes after the break and Korsten planted the ball straight down the middle of the goal from the penalty spot.

A minute later Etherington burst down the left again and this time his centre was buried by the onrushing Hillier from close range.

The arrival of Ferdinand and Iversen lifted the game again and it didn’t take long for both to test Heald from distance.

Then, in injury time, Walker’s clearance found Korsten, he lobbed it to Ferdinand who controlled and volleyed home in style.
