Les back in contention

Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Football Club is located in North London. The club is also known as Spurs. Tottenham's home ground is White Hart Lane. The club motto is Audere est Facere (To dare is to do).

Les Ferdinand is back in the squad to face Aston Villa — but boss Glenn Hoddle has promised to give the striker until the eleventh hour to decide whether or not he feels ready to play.

Les was actually pencilled in for a return to the starting line-up after a hamstring injury at Liverpool last weekend but withdrew at the final minute after a family bereavement.

Glenn said the 34-year-old had suffered a ‘traumatic week’ after his loss and that a lot would depend on his condition mentally.

Glenn explained: “Les has had a pretty traumatic week and will we make a decision on Saturday as to whether we play him or not.

“A lot depends on his mental state as to if he feels he capable of going out and performing after losing someone very close to him.

“Family always comes first and it is always a delicate one.

“Les has trained a couple of days this week but he’s had a traumatic week and a lot of things to sort out. It’s been a difficult week for him and we’ll give him that extra night to see how he feels.”

As predicted, none of the injured players return for the visit of Villa.

That means Sol Campbell, Chris Perry, Ledley King, Steffen Freund, Darren Anderton, Steffen Iversen, Sergei Rebrov and Chris Armstrong all remain on the sidelines.

Long-term victims Mauricio Taricco and Ben Thatcher have both returned to full training but are still some way off match fitness.

Squad: Sullivan, Walker, Carr, Doherty, Gardner, Thelwell, Young, Davies, Sherwood, Clemence, Leonhardsen, Korsten, Ferdinand, Hillier, Etherington, Piercy, Toner.
